NEW Salford City boss Richie Wellens admits it will be “weird” working for his boyhood idols at Moor Lane.
The Ammies are famously co-owned by Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, David Beckham and the Neville brothers, along with Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim.
Wellens, meanwhile, is a boyhood Red who came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford during the club’s late nineties golden era.
But the 40-year-old made just one substitute appearance in 1999 and never shared a pitch with his new employers before leaving to forge an impressive 700-game career in the EFL.
“I actually find it quite embarrassing when people talk about the owners and call me a former team-mate,” says Wellens.
“I wasn’t a team-mate. I was there, but that’s about it. I’ve never played a first-team game with any of them.
“I wasn’t good enough to make it at Man United. Those lads were good enough to make it anywhere - they went on to win doubles and trebles and everything you can win.
