As bikes get more capable, trails get gnarlier and speeds get higher, body armour is no longer just for downhill daredevils; here's six lighter-weight options to keep your body safe

USED & ABUSED
How we test
While it's impractical (and downright dangerous) to seek out crashes to test protection kit, frequent use by experienced riders gives a good insight into comfort, fit and function. We prioritised freedom of movement and paid close attention to pad coverage, heat management and moisture-wicking, as well as ensuring any zips, seams and fabrics were up to the task of repeated use and frequent rubbing and movement.
Over recent years, mountain biking has seen a big shift in the type of tracks and terrain tackled by the average rider. Fuelled by ever-improving, safer and more stable bikes, we've all got faster downhill on trails that now pack in more extreme and challenging features. And, guess what? With the increased speed and technicality, it makes more sense than ever to double down on protection, especially on days when hitting uplifted bike parks, racing enduro or trail riding with faster mates.
Thankfully, alongside the improving bike tech and increasing trail speeds, body protection has also moved with the times, so there are now plenty of slick, lightweight and low-profile options to suit riders that regularly enjoy more technical terrain. If you're anything like us, you'll only wear more protection if it is lightweight and streamlined, and ensures an unencumbered ride quality. The good news is that modern body armour is no longer the bulky, heavy and restrictive affair it was years ago.

100% GLENDALE GLASSES
When it comes to eyewear, having a large lens not only offers a lot more protection from trail splatter, it puts the frames further out from your field of view, allowing you to focus on the terrain in front of you. The Glendale is absolutely vast, and actually has a lens size akin to a full downhill goggle, so you literally can’t see the top or sides of the frame.

DMR STAGE 2 MTB RAIL SADDLE
DMR's new Stage 2 MTB Rail is one of those new/old products. The shape and construction are identical to the existing Oi Oi saddle, but the company has wrapped it in a new skin and added some harder-wearing reinforcement to the edges. It's also toned down the lairy graphics; this saddle only comes in plain black.
