TOURISM MINISTER CELEBRATES MM2Hers’ CONTRIBUTIONS
The Minister of Tourism, Datuk Seri Nazri, announced that the MM2H programme has contributed around RM12.8 billion to the Malaysian economy as a result of the spending by MM2H visa holders. The largest contribution was to the property sector, where they had spent RM4.9 billion, though it’s unclear how officials arrived at the figure for the balance.
The programme has attracted around 33,000 people from 126 countries since it was launched in 2002. China, Japan, Bangladesh, and the UK are the four countries with the most approved applicants.
In fact, research by TEG Media reveals that the majority of MM2H visa holders actually choose not to come and live here. During the early days of the programme, the visas were provided relatively easily and many people with no intention of settling here applied or were given the visas.
There were also applicants from countries which were experiencing internal conflict and people applied so they would have someone where to go should they decide the situation had deteriorated to a point where they should leave.
