A temporary stay in a care home can, in the long run, benefit all

- Julie Lucas

Taking a break

Caring for a friend or relative can be a full-time occupation, at times rewarding but also demanding, often leaving the carer with little time for themselves. Although trying to be Wonder Woman or Superman is admirable, it is important carers take a break away from the stresses and demands of the role. For families going on holiday or relatives needing some time out, choosing a respite stay in a care home can benefit all.

There are all sorts of reasons why people choose respite, explains Bernard Mawoyo regional director with Care UK.

“The most common is because someone caring for an older relative wants to take a short break to recharge their batteries while knowing their loved one is still being cared for in a safe and friendly setting,” he says.

“We also see people coming to us while they are recovering from an illness, injury or operation and need a bit more support than usual. I truly believe that many families and friends risk their own health and wellbeing by trying to soldier on and care for a loved one for too long without taking a break.
