Overcoming topographical challenges, JJM tastes success in remote Arunachal villages

At a time when the Government of Arunachal Pradesh is pursuing the goal of making the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) a success by aiming to provide 100% tap water connections to all households in the state by 2023, the success story of Serin, a quaint village located at an altitude of 2,000 feet in the Raga Block of Kamle district and a few others has evoked confidence.
Despite all the difficulties in implementation, the tiny and remote Serin village inhabited by the Nyishi community with a total population of 130, which also requires a full-day’s trekking by foot to reach, has finally got a place in the country’s Jal Jeevan Mission map. This is a permanent respite from the daily arduous task of fetching water from nearby spring sources and the villagers are visibly elated as uninterrupted potable water will now be available in their premises.

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance.The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
