From 1810 to 1870, plains bison were a main source of survival and income for the Métis.
The Métis made use of nearly every part of the bison, using the hides for clothing, the meat for food, and many other parts for tools and special purposes. The meat had to be dried or made into pemmican as there was no other way of preserving it at the time. Pemmican and the goods made from other parts of the bison became trade items for the Métis, enabling them to barter for whatever they needed, but could not make or get for themselves.
