Green Up Your Workspace

Indoor plants have made it back into the home, adding colour or lush greenery as indoor decor, so why shouldn’t that be extended into the personal working space?

Green Up Your Workspace

How would a leafy plant or two on the desk, next to the computer or alongside the printer, make a difference to our working lives? Green is good for us, say the behavioural experts, and it has become common knowledge that the colour green evokes positive energy and harmony, reducing stress and anxiety. There are other benefits too.

4 reasons to have a pot plant on your desk

In our technology-driven world it’s easy to lose touch with nature, especially when sitting at a computer or working from a laptop for most of the day. Plants within arm’s reach bring the outside in and keep us connected to nature, and all we have to do is water and care for them.

Plants add beauty and liveliness, especially to office spaces that can be rather sterile. Even in an open plan office, a plant at your working station makes it more personal.

Greenery, particularly if the leaves are textured or patterned, is restful, particularly for our eyes when they need a break from the computer screen. Indoor plants eliminate air pollutants, found in the average office, from carpets and furnishings to solvents and ink. They also contribute to good air quality by increasing humidity and absorbing carbon dioxide. It’s estimated that 350g leaf mass per person, or 2 – 3 plants per 30m2, is all that is needed to help purify the air.

Easy plants for beginners

For those who don’t see themselves as gardeners, these are good beginner plants because they are virtually indestructible.

Golden Oregano

Origanum vulgare ‘Aureum’, as its name suggests, is golden yellow in full sun and cool weather. These bright herbs are highly fragrant, with a classic oregano taste and aroma, and are often used in the kitchen for pasta and pizza. In summer, the yellow leaves will be covered with small pink and purple flowers.
