What is luxury? It is something you need to live with, need to use — every day. Building on this philosophy, Ar. Kunal and Ar. Khushboo Khandelwal of Design Inc, decided to design the massive 7,000 sq ft Chennai home on the principle of understated luxury. ‘It means the idea of luxury is practical, elegant, rich, plush and personal. A space that holds you in awe and stays with you long after you have left it — but without being opulent or in your face. It would transcend the barriers of time,’ describes Kunal.

Designing a home that houses four generations was not easy. Each member wanted the space that resonated with their personality and grant them privacy. ‘The family wanted a home that was elegant and luxurious. So, we designed in such a way that each generation gets its own, bespoke space while blending it seamlessly with the larger design sensibility. The head of the family, great-grand parents are about 75 years; their son and daughter-in-law are about 55 years old; the grandson and grand daughter-in-law are in their 30s, while the great grandson is just a year old,’ explains Khushboo.
