Although Tony Joseph needs no introduction, the eminent architect’s career is peppered with twists, turns and triumphs. In this discourse, he reveals his work ethic, which has led to his standing as a design force in India

Architect Tony Joseph, founder of Kozhikodebased firm Stapati and founder-chairman of Avani Institute of Design, is clear about two things. That no two projects must look alike or even similar, and that the heritage of Indian design must be kept relevant for years to come. Such ideologies have established Tony as a force to be reckoned. Indeed, his impact on the evolution of Indian architecture is undeniable. Acknowledged as a thought leader in the field, this self-effacing man has infused Indian sensibilities and global outlook into developing a style that’s distinct yet instantly recognisable.
The name Stapati is Sanskrit for ‘architect’ or ‘master builder’ but there is nothing simple in how the firm has grown under Tony’s tutelage. His repertoire spans masterplans as well as residential, commercial, institutional and hospitality projects, many of which have won him accolades over the last three decades.
