CASE STUDY
BRIEF To update and redesign the master suite in an impressive but dated Victorian country house.
LAYOUT The original main bedroom, bathroom and a guest room were combined to create this rear garden-facing suite.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE Long lead times and staggered installations meant the project to upgrade the whole house took over three years.
INTERIOR DESIGNER Carmen Evans, Pan's Lodge panslodge.com
It's rare to achieve that elusive balance of serenity and drama in any room, never mind a bathroom. Stray too far towards drama and you'll never be able to relax. Aim for serene and you might land on dull. It isn't impossible, though, as this bathroom by interior design studio Pan's Lodge proves. The secret, as ever, is in the attention to detail and the quality of the materials used.

It is part of a hefty renovation of an eight-bedroom Victorian country house in Buckinghamshire. Interior designer Carmen Evans, founder of Pan's Lodge, describes the brief: “The owner has classical tastes with a bit of a modern touch, and they wanted a something luxurious that would also stand the test of time."

TASTEMAKER EMILIO GIOVANAZZI
The first time Emilio Giovanazzi was asked to create a cocktail list, he was working in Paperinos, the beloved but now-closed Italian restaurant in Glasgow that belonged to his uncle. “It was a great place, and it would consistently win awards for its wine list,” he recalls. As the city’s eating habits evolved, they needed to think of a way to attract a younger crowd. Emilio's dad (who owned La Parmigiana restaurant), figured cocktails was the answer. “He went to a charity shop and picked up the first cocktail book he could find,” says Emilio. “And it happened to be The Savoy Cocktail Book.”
