Keep your old sash windows working like they did when new
-
Double-hung timber sash windows are a real blast from the past. They work using weights hidden on the sides of the window that counterbalance the weight of the sash. The two are connected using sash cords, but these don’t last forever and eventually break. Luckily, replacing them is a fairly simple task, and your windows can quickly be returned to their former glory.
Gather your supplies
• Sash cords to match existing (8mm is a common size)
You’ll also need
Utility knife; paint scraper; chisel; pincers; 30mm screws; pliers; machine oil; string; drill; 40mm nails; hammer; putty; gap filler; paintbrush; undercoat; paint to match window
EASY STEPS TO WINDOW REPAIRS
Here’s how

STEP 1 Using a sharp utility knife, cut the paint between stop bead on inside of window and the surrounding frame.
STEP 2 Starting at centre, use a paint scraper to prise stop bead away from frame.
