Prediabetes explained
Prediabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal but are not high enough to be classified as Type 2 Diabetes. Prediabetes is diagnosed through a blood test. Almost 50 per cent people diagnosed with prediabetes will eventually be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
Prediabetes diet
It is important to pay attention to your diet if you have been diagnosed with prediabetes. Simple modifications or food substitutions in your daily diet can help you avoid the onset of Diabetes.
Prediabetes diet helps you lower your risk of onset of Type 2 Diabetes and reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It can help with weight loss.
Here are some simple tips to help manage a diagnosis of prediabetes through your diet:
Monitor your carbohydrate intake
The quantity of carbohydrate intake is very subjective. The idea behind paying attention to your carbohydrate intake is to avoid the onset of Diabetes.
Identifying the appropriate amount of carbohydrate intake depends upon your activity levels and also if you take any prescribed medication. Active people can eat more carbohydrates than those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Finding the right balance is important to keep your blood glucose levels in control.
Understand glycaemic index (GI) of foods
Glycaemic index (GI) is a tool to help determine how a particular food item will affect your blood glucose level. Foods high in GI raise the blood glucose levels faster. Foods with a lower GI are less likely to cause a spike in your blood glucose level.
High fibre foods have lower GI. Processed foods which are processed, cooked or canned have higher GI.
