Stacey Norman chats to Janine Jorgensen about stepping outside her comfort zone, being unafraid to voice her opinion, and how she’s ready to embark on a brand-new chapter

Radio and TV personality Stacey Norman, 29, got her big break in broadcasting in grade 11 when she took part in KFM’s Youth Day Experience, which gives high school students a chance to learn about radio. Recognising talent, the programme manager called her parents and told them they had a DJ in the making. After matriculating in 2005, Stacey switched her initial plans to study food technology to follow a career in the media. A year later she returned to KFM as a presenter. She made the move from Cape Town to Johannesburg in 2013 to host the weekday morning show on 947, and has since became known for her honesty, wit and warmth. She recently left the radio station to pursue new opportunities. Stacey is also the co-host of reality talent show The Voice. She lives in Illovo with her cat, Goku. I really didn’t expect to leave my job at 947 this year. I’ve been incredibly blessed in my radio career; I started out with the weekend shifts then moved to daytime − I have earned my broadcasting stripes and now I feel like it’s time for something new. One of my biggest fears is that I will end up stagnating, and that’s why I have made peace with leaving. I need to be uncomfortable to learn new things. Before leaving 947, I already knew I couldn’t keep on hosting the same show. I don’t believe I know everything there is to know about broadcasting, but I wasn’t uncomfortable anymore. I was in the studio by myself every day: I would come up with the content, run the show, manage the desk, screen the callers and put them on air, and do all the social media. The show was my baby for three years, but when I realised I could do it with my eyes closed, I knew it was time to move on.
