Anxiety – the anticipation of possible difficulties or trouble that may lie ahead – is an accepted part of everyday life. We worry about getting caught in traffic and being late to collect the kids, whether the dinner we’ve made is healthy, and if we’ll be able to drift off to sleep without a problem.
That’s all fairly normal, but it can become problematic if these daily worries start to paralyse rather than motivate you. Many people – and women in particular – suffer from chronic worrying or ‘free-floating’ anxiety, that’s not linked to anything in particular – it’s just there, all the time. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) causes you to feel high levels of anxiety about a range of situations over a long period – six months or more – rather than because of a specific event, and it can lead to physical symptoms like dizziness, tiredness, trembling, shortness of breath, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping. If you spend far too much time worrying, here are some tips that can help.
Tame the voice in your head
Anxiety can cause nagging, negative thoughts. To combat them, remind yourself about the positive things that have happened and keep repeating these. Think of when you were able to cope successfully with a challenging situation. Picture what happened, where you were, and what you did to face issues head on.
