She risked her career when she claimed sexual harassment. Now her medical journey has taken another path

My Dream Still Intact

SHE made waves last year when she spoke out against the treatment she’d endured at the hands of doctors who were sup posed to mentor her and show her the way during her internship.

Instead, Dr Yumna Moosa claimed, she was sexually harassed by her seniors and experienced racism – charges she made public by taking to YouTube to expose the “bullying tactics” employed by senior doctors at a state hospital in Durban (YOU, 18 August 2016).

The video went viral and many junior doctors and senior academics applauding her for her stand. But the authorities weren’t happy: Yumna (29) was charged with clinical incompetence by the hospital after she complained about poor super vision and discrimination, a charge that has since been overturned.

And the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) launched an inquiry into her complaints but recently concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to suggest unprofessional conduct.
