The Costa Concordia was one of the biggest and most luxurious cruise ships ever built. But at 9.42pm on 13 January 2012, hours after leaving port in Italy for a seven-day cruise, disaster struck.

With more than 4,000 passengers and crew on board, the liner hit rocks off the island of Giglio and began to tilt violently to starboard, as all the lights went out.
