Former East German border-patrol guard Martin Rauch has been through a lot in the space of six years. After being recruited by his aunt Lenora to spy for his country in West Berlin in Deutschland 83, he impersonated a murdered soldier and prevented a nuclear strike.

Three years later, in Deutschland 86, he became embroiled in weapons trafficking while in exile, and upon returning home, discovered that he had a son, Max, with former fiancée Annett.
