Captain Sir Tom Moore reflects on his extraordinary life

- JUDY EWENS, IAN MACEWAN

A knight to remember

A mild-mannered former manager of a concrete company sounds an unlikely national hero, but war veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore captured hearts across the globe after raising almost £40million for NHS charities during the COVID-19 pandemic by walking 100 laps around his Bedfordshire garden in the run-up to his 100th birthday back in April.

Thanks to his inspirational feat, the fundraiser has received a host of much-deserved plaudits and was even knighted by the Queen last month at Windsor Castle.

Now, in ITV’s The Life & Times of Captain Sir Tom, he looks back on his childhood in Keighley, Yorkshire, his wartime experiences and his late-life fame.

Here, he reveals all…

What was your childhood like?
