GEORGE Rodger was a British photographer who had a life-long love of travel and adventure.
Known as ‘the quiet Englishman’, he was a dedicated photojournalist and, together with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and David ‘Chim’ Seymour, he founded the Magnum Photos agency in 1947.
What was his background?
Rodger was born in Cheshire in 1908. He left school at 17 and joined the Merchant Navy and travelled the world.
How did he start to find work as a professional photographer?
Despite never having operated a studio camera, Rodger bluffed his way into a job as a portrait photographer for the BBC magazine
