Chris writes in praise of that most overlooked of activities – a nice sit-down

Back before The Great Crisis, I was doing a late-night Sainsbury’s shop. In the car park, there was a gathering of young people in pimped-up cars. It was before we’d ever heard of social distancing. Closest to me were a couple sitting meditatively in their souped-up hatchback. If there was a Debrett’s for boy racers, it would specify that the gentleman at the wheel should wear his baseball cap backward. The chap here, appropriately reverse-capped, sat in serene contemplation with his female companion. This was no steamy windowed grope fest. It was a boyfriend and girlfriend sitting and enjoying a companionable silence, happy in each other’s company. In previous generations, this quiet meeting of young minds might have taken place in a bus shelter, possibly by the light of a Player’s No 6.
