What Does His Gut Say?

Gut is a crucial aspect to consider while monitoring your little one’s health. While a strong gut is important to boost Baby’s immunity, research states that good bacteria play a significant role in ensuring a healthy digestive system. While babies recover soon from most stomach aches, some digestive problems can be a cause of concern. Do you know which red flags to watch out for and when you should make that call to the paediatrician? Here is a low-down on the five common gut issues that may need your serious attention. Read on to know what you may have to fight against.

Colic

If your little munchkin exhibits extreme fits of crying for at least three hours a day, thrice a week and for at least three weeks, then there might be a possibility that she has developed colic. Doctors usually diagnose the condition based on this ‘rule of threes’.

While many attempts at pinpointing the cause behind the condition have been made, there hasn’t been much certainty about the ‘whys’ of colic. However, there is evidence to suggest that it may be caused by gut bacteria. According to a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center, US, have found an organism called Klebsiella—a normally occurring bacterium in the mouth, skin and intestines—in the intestines of babies experiencing colic and gut inflammation too.

Child Advisor and Delhi-based paediatrician, Dr. Sisir Paul says, “Infantile colic is usually common till babies are 4-5 months old, occurring mainly due to swallowed air, resulting from crying. It is also known as aerophagia.”
