Don’t worry if you can’t quite figure out exactly who Anna Delvey is. After all, it’s a question that those who thought they knew her best are still asking themselves five years after she went to prison.

The self-professed millionaire German heiress lived a lavish life in New York City in 2013. For four years, her days were a whirlwind of private jets, designer clothes and fancy parties, where she rubbed shoulders with the elite of New York society.

Her generosity was legendary. “She gave to everyone,” hotel concierge Neff Davis told Jessica Pressler, whose article in New York magazine uncovered the con. “Uber drivers, $100 cash. Meals – listen. You know how you reach for your credit card? She wouldn’t let me.”

But Delvey, whose escapades have been dramatised in a series called Inventing Anna, hid a shocking secret. The socialite was really Anna Sorokin, a 25-year-old Russian immigrant whose dad was a truck driver. There was no $95 million trust fund.

“Anna was a character,” former friend Rachel DeLoache Williams explained. “Her default setting was haughty, but she didn’t take herself too seriously.”
