If I Haven't Gotten My Dues: It's The Industry's Loss, Not Mine!

How has your journey as a film actor been?

My journey has been good. I am happy with whatever I have achieved. I have done it on my own and I have done it without compromising on the quality of the work. Without compromising on my morals. So, I am really happy.

Have there been any challenges you’ve had to face?

Every day is a challenge. You don’t get ahead without facing these challenges. The funny part of being an actor is that you know you are self-employed so you have to be in charge of your career. You know it’s kind of your baby and yet you have to treat it like a business even though it’s a creative thing.

You have done a lot of films and the powerhouse performer that you are, you don’t seem to have got your dues. Why?

Well, I don’t know whether to be flattered or to be offended by your question. But should I be flattered because you think there is more to me to be discovered or should I be offended because you think I have not got my dues? Well I think the problem with the film industry is that they think differently. Because I started my film career with Gangs of Wasseypur, where I played an older character and was not very glamourized. So people had a hard time placing me initially. People have a very narrow definition of how they see a woman or how an actor or a woman should look. I have never really gone out of my way to make sure that people see me any way differently. My only strengths are my performance and my integrity. I don’t really care, honestly if I haven’t gotten my dues.

It’s the film industry’s problem, it’s their loss and not mine.
