Maxim loves shooting with you. Is that love mutual? What’s your message for Maxim’s 10th anniversary?

Whoa! It’s been 10 years and I’ve been on four of your covers now! It’s great. I mean I was Maxim’s first Covergirl. I think Maxim is a modern, bold testament to what is hot in a modern India. And that’s what I like about it. I like the fact that it’s unapologetic. It caters to modern men and women in India. It’s not conformed itself to what India means on a broad spectrum.

You just topped our Hot 100 list again, the only woman ever to achieve that. How does that feel?

It’s extremely flattering. I just love the tag line “only woman in the world,” I try to do that with everything I do. That’s like my motto.

You’ve become the international champion of diversity—was that a conscious decision? Is it a responsibility that lies heavy on your shoulders?

I’m someone who believes in personal evolution. From my first film to now, I’ve never believed in repeating characters or plots. I get bored easily. But I don’t feel it as a sense of responsibility to the world to do things. My career has been a very solitary creative expression of what I think I am. I’m glad that people have joined me on this journey and have understood what I’m trying to do because it is a little to the left, a little different. And it’s been like this since my first few Hindi films. Like my character in Andaaz had shades of grey. I played one of the most notorious characters very early on in my career, in Aitraaz. Even in the U.S., I insisted that I wanted to play as badass a character as I would play in a Hindi film.
