… It would say that The Great Wall, the US$150mil epic directed by Zhang Yimou, starring Matt Damon and Andy Lau, is going to be a monster movie — in all sense of the term.
In The Great Wall, the US$150mil (S$217mil) historical fantasy blockbuster opening this week, the Wall was built to keep out — wait for it — mythical beasts called Tao Tie that hunger for human flesh. Now, imagine how fun history lessons would have been if this were real. The premise of the movie (think of it as a Chinese medieval version of Pacific Rim where instead of gigantic robots, you get a colour-blocking army and... a wall) is so ambitious, there’s little wonder it’s the biggest Hollywood-China co-production ever. The stakes are sky-high for the movie too — it’s designed to become, not a wall, but a bridge for the world’s two biggest box office markets.
