As an action hero, Gerard Butler has fought ancient Persian tyrants (300), USA-hating terrorists (Olympus Has Fallen), and scathing reviews (Gods of Egypt). In Geostorm, the 47-year-old Scot confronts his greatest challenge: Mother Nature on the fritz. In the movie, the eponymous phenomenon is a global meteorological calamity — made up of tsunamis, tornadoes and hailstorms — caused by a network of malfunctioning weather-controlling satellites. Enter Butler’s scientist Jake Lawson as the troubleshooter. And while he’s saving the world, Lawson’s brother (Jim Sturgess) is embroiled in a plot to kill the POTUS (Andy Garcia). Come again? How the two things are linked is what makes Geostorm — by first-time director Dean Devlin, the frequent collaborator of Master of Disaster Epics Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Godzilla) — so much fun, says Butler.
