THE MECHANICS OF WORKING FROM HOME

The recent COV-ID-19 situation has forced companies to reorient their work plans, and shift the work landscape to home. Professionals today, login from the confines of their homes, work to their organisational goals largely using online access, instruments like mobile or a laptop, and try to bring in productivity working from a place, which most of them have not associated with work – Home!

While the initial reaction was incredulity and the sheer impossibility of such work models, we seem to be learning and slowly making the most of it. There are some clear negatives – how does one interact with colleagues and customer? Will we lose the personal touch in our interaction? Even a face to face conversation over a video conference is not ‘personal’ enough, and, then, the time lags, phased out conversations where replies come well after the queries. But, these are easing out slowly and our focus on making these tools work, is accelerating our ability to acclimatise quickly.

Some of the industries like consulting and IT/ITES have some experience of this because we are used to working with cross-border teams and multi-skilled task forces are often composed of professionals working from different countries. Here are some interesting learnings one could build on.
