ARCELORMITTAL NIPPON STEEL INDIA HAS DRAWN UP AMBITIOUS PLANS TO EXPAND TO 30 MTPA TO REMAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF SUPPORTING THE RAPID AND SUSTAINED RISE IN STEEL CONSUMPTION IN INDIA IN THE COMING DECADE. WHILE DOING SO, IT IS ALSO FIRMLY COMMITTED TO PLACING INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY AT THE HEART OF ITS MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IN LINE WITH THE COUNTRY'S CLIMATE ACTION GOALS. MT SPEAKS WITH DILIP OOMMEN, CEO, ARCELORMITTAL NIPPON STEEL INDIA, TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COMPANY'S PIONEERING INITIATIVES, WHAT IT TAKES TO PRODUCE SMARTER STEELS, AND HOW INDIA HOLDS THE POTENTIAL TO LEAD CARBON-NEUTRAL STEEL PRODUCTION AND DELIVERY.
STEEL IS ONE OF THE CORE PILLARS OF today's society, and as one of the most critical engineering and construction materials, it is present in many aspects of our lives. The world produces a lot of steel - over 240 kilos for every person in the world every year. We pretty much can't do anything that does not somehow require steel, which is strong, durable, flexible, reusable, and the most easily recycled material.
With India setting the target of achieving netzero emissions by 2070, steel production which is a CO2 and energy-intensive activity needs to evolve to become smarter and more sustainable in order to remain committed to mitigating its footprint from ecological and economic perspectives.

As the leading steel manufacturer, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/ NS India) has already begun taking the right steps, striking a balance between ambitious business goals and unwavering dedication toward sustainability. The company has already mitigated its CO2 emissions per ton by 37% since 2015, reinforcing its commitment to a green economy. At the same time, it continues to lay strong emphasis on human care through adherence to the highest Health and Safety standards at the workplaces, and community-centric initiatives across the country.
The company's onus on research and development ensures that they are at the forefront of the evolution of the steelmaking process and products – supported by parent companies ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, the two global steel giants that are leading the way to decarbonise steel.

A look back and the road ahead
The year 2025 will be remembered as a period of recalibration for India's manufacturing sector. Far from a mere continuation of post-pandemic recovery, it was a year defined by the complex interplay of global economic headwinds, rapid technological adoption and a decisive domestic push towards self-reliance and sustainability. For an industry that forms the bedrock of the nation's economic ambition, 2025 was less about incremental growth and more about structural transformation, setting the stage for a more competitive and demanding 2026.
