Karim Rashid, the dynamic designer shares his insights into how he embraces the democracy of creativity and has collaborated with clients to create affordanle and accessinle ‘democratic design’

With a larger-than-life persona and a portfolio than runs into thousands of design objects and projects, Karim Rashid is a one of the most prolific pluralistic designers of our generation.
Known for filling sketchbooks with ideas on a weekly basis and at the time of writing, Karim has more than 4,000 designs in production, over 300 awards to his name, and client work in over 40 countries.
His family left his birth country of Egypt when he was still a baby, but Karim has been a frequent visitor to the Middle East and describes himself as a “global citizen”, with a base in the United States, where he established his private design studio in New York City in 1992.
Starting out as an industrial and product designer, he has successfully entered the spheres of architecture and interior design, creating interiors for Morimoto restaurant, Philadelphia and Semiramis hotel, Athens, amongst others, creating his own branded sensual-minimalism.
