THE ECONOMY AND EQUITIES ARE NOT “TALKING” TO EACH OTHER?

We have yet to declare victory in our fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Yes, new cases have come down.
Subsequently, the economy has been gradually reopened as more industries are allowed to be fully operational. While such development is heartening, there seems to be a sense of discomfort about how the equities market had behaved recently.
Obviously, the FBMKLCI has improved from its recent low of 1,219 points on 19 March, a day after the Movement Control Order (MCO) was first implemented. Presently, at the time of writing, the FBMKLCI has been hovering above the 1,500 points. That is 23 percent gain in slightly over two months. If one were to annualise the number, that is more than 100 percent return!
However, the global economy is expected to be in recession this year. So, is the economy and equities not “talking” to each other?
