In double-quick time, the JAP speedway engine became the unit of choice if you wanted to win, a situation which remained for more than three decades.
A longside JAP speedway engine development, specialists made frames, including speedway rider Alec Jackson, who was to later take over speedway engine production.
Most off-season during the early/mid 1930s, engine development work had two objectives – reliability and power. For example, over winter 1932/3, the cylinder head was modified, which, with other details, took measured (at the crankshaft) output to over 40bhp.
At the same time, for reliability, the rocker box was redesigned, the small oilbox for gravity feeding the valve stems between races was dropped, with the rocker box redesigned to accept an oil feed.

The diminutive Charlie Dodson was the last man to win a TT, the 1928 Senior, on a ‘flat-tank’ machine, then the next year became the first (and only) winner of a TT on a saddle tank Sunbeam, as well as recording the last ever success in the Island for the Marston maker.
