Riding Tips: He Eyes' Have It...

Whilst this might seem like a bit of an obvious topic to cover - using your eyes when riding - as always, there’s more to this than meets the eye…sorry for the pun. There are a couple of tips that it is essential to adopt if you are to be as safe as possible on our crowded roads.

What is most important to realise is that you can pretty much guarantee that not every other road user is using their eyes while piloting their vehicle. They might be looking, but they are not seeing! Sometimes they might not be looking at all, so the upshot is that it is up to you to do all the looking and ‘seeing’ for yourself and those around you. In short, your safety is in your own hands.

Firstly, let’s look at riding on a crowded road, either one or two lane. You’re sitting in a queue of traffic - moving traffic - and you’re happy to move with it and not filter through it. Where are you looking? If you’re looking at the tail lights of the car in front of you, then you’re not giving yourself the best reaction time if its brake lights come on.
