Asia's Rising Young Designers

|Issue 98
The learning and sharing continues at the regional installment of Asia Young Designer Award (AYDA) 2016 in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Conceived and organised by Nippon Paint Malaysia Group, this premier Award for interior design and architecture students is currently being competed in over 15 countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. The theme for AYDA 2016, “Be Bold. Be Free. Be You.” rewards participants to get out of their comfort zones, to strike out on new paths, and deliver original and unique design identities without boundaries.
The students from both Architecture and Interior Design categories were very well prepared and excited to share their selected projects to a panel of distinguished judges from all over the region. It was more than just a ‘competition’ as each presentation turned into a learning session with students and judges sharing ideas and constructive comments.
The Platinum Winner of the Architecture Category is twenty-five year old, Ueda Mitsumori, whose concept idea of “The Old Matsuo River School” looks at a seamless integration of the old town with the new town, through building schools on the site replicating the path where the river used to flow. Working with his classmate Akiko Kubo on this project, the lanky architecture student presents a captivating story to his design scheme.
