A Creative Couple
The South African Artist
|Issue 22
Two artistic temperaments have come together in the form of married couple RYAN and JODIE LOUBSER.
Jodie was born in Cape Town but grew up in the small town of Potgietersrus, now known as Mokopane, in Limpopo Province. Her extensive travels through Europe and South Africa have inspired choice of subject matter.
From 1996 to 1998 Jodie studied graphic design at what was then the Pretoria Technikon, since renamed the Tshwane University of Technology, or TUT.
Influenced by Ryan, Jodie painted in her spare time whilst working in retail. After numerous successful exhibitions, she decided to leave the business and become a full time artist.
She enjoys the freedom to experiment with new methods of applying paint. “With my realism, I prefer a natural, soft pallet and with my admiration for the impressionistic French influences, I draw the viewer into a more colourful pallet knifed interpretation. There is a privacy of emotion in my subjects, which leaves the viewer with a memory of nostalgia. Each painting has its own story and emotion woven within the technique and there is a true challenge in trying to unravel your memory experienced by each portrayal.”
