|August - September 2020
We sat down for a Zoom chat with German airbrush master Younes Bouchlouch. Here’s what he has to say about art, his work, and how to get into airbrushing…
-
I started generally with art like any other kid would start: by drawing and doodling. Back in the day, hand-animated movies motivated me to explore that kind of art style and to get started. When I moved to Germany from Morocco, I discovered the airbrush and decided to study art. I went to the Technical School of Art in Hamburg and also discovered the world of digital design there!
What inspires your work today?
Currently, amusingly enough, it’s the customers who are inspiring me because I’m receiving a lot of different inquiries. For example, the shoes I’ve done are inspiring because I have to get in touch with the material, research, and explore it. There’s a lot of inspiration coming from there and obviously my own ideas come on top so I can kind of build it up from there.
Right now, in some ways, it’s also a little bit of a pity that the most money I’m making comes from commissions from different customers. I would love to have more time for my own personal art but unfortunately, it’s not working that way at the moment!

You work on so many different surfaces and materials. Are there some that are easier to work with than others, are there some that you prefer working with? What are the different challenges there?

I was accepted to Art & Design where, at the time, we had to take four periods of art. I fell in love with the airbrush and never put it down since 1988. Fast forward to today, and I continue my education, I attempt to take yearly airbrush classes, in order to improve and grow.
