MASTER MANUAL MODE
Photography week
|August 06, 2020
Step away from auto and semi-auto modes to take total control of your exposures. Dan Mold shows you how to get the best from Manual mode

One of the best features of digital cameras is their creative modes, namely the semi-automatic Aperture Priority (A or Av on the mode dial) and Shutter Priority (S or Tv) modes. They’re great for many situations, as they let you set of some of the exposure parameters, while the camera looks after the rest to produce a well-exposed shot; they can be especially helpful if you’re new to photography, as they free you up to concentrate on getting your focusing and composition spot-on.
However, your camera also features a Manual mode (M) that allows you to take full control of your settings, but many less experienced photographers have never experimented that much with Manual, perhaps finding it too daunting, or too difficult to get good results with. And that’s a shame, because Manual is a powerful and versatile mode that you really should get to grips with. It’s essential for certain situations, and will ensure you leave nothing to chance with the art you’re creating – after all, modern cameras are pretty clever, but they can’t read your mind.
For this feature, I’ve compiled some top tips covering situations where you should use Manual mode, and how to get the best results by experimenting with fundamental exposure settings. I’ll also offer some advice on how to change the look of your images by tweaking things such as focusing or white balance. Read on to see how it’s all done, and you’ll be shooting like a professional in no time!
WHEN SHOULD YOU REALLY USE MANUAL MODE?
