“When I’m shooting, whether it be a self-portrait or with my mother or another photographer, it’s almost like therapy to me, it’s extremely important to me to be as vulnerable and open as possible in front of the camera.”

BREAKING FREE Interview with Gina Harrison & Angie Wynne

AN: Please introduce yourself, where are you from?

GH: My name is Gina Harrison, I’m a 26-yearold artist from Manchester, and currently based in London. AW: My name is Angie Wynne, I am a 52-year-old photographer living in Manchester, I am Gina’s mother.

AN: Please tell us about your series Breaking Free and what inspired you to create this body of work.

GH: This set of images is part of my anxiety series (#ghanxiety on Instagram) where I focus on my struggle with depression and anxiety, photographing this and channeling the energy that used to make me suffer so much and turning it into art has been an amazing journey for me where I have found great peace and solace, and in that, I’ve been able to help others as well as myself. When I’m shooting, whether it be a self-portrait or with my mother or another photographer, it’s almost like therapy to me, it’s extremely important to me to be as vulnerable and open as possible in front of the camera, it’s only then we create a true image. In this particular series Breaking Free I focused on the idea of how it can feel to be so consumed and exhausted in your thoughts and words, not only of yourself but of others, here, I struggle amongst by demons (symbolized by the flour) and try to break free from this.
