The name American Quarter Horse (AQH) is a registered trademark that can only be used on purebred, registered horses. An AQH cannot be registered if it is a crossbreed. There is also no such thing as an unregistered AQH.
This is the most popular horse breed in the US, and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), based in Amarillo, Texas, has more than five million registered horses. It serves over 350 000 members globally, including South Africa, and stipulates policies, showing rules and breeding rules, as well as detailed conformation criteria.
South Africans can join the AQHA and take part in shows and events locally and internationally. The AQH is also registered with SA Studbook.
