An eelworm (nematode) population is of little consequence in many crops, yet it can be a serious problem in carrots. A few eelworms at an early stage will cause forking and lumps on the roots, rendering the carrots unmarketable.

And don’t think that virgin soil is free of eelworms! The worst infestation I’ve ever seen was in a crop planted in virgin soil.
Many weeds and grasses host eelworms; not for nothing is it considered the world’s number one agricultural pest.
THE ROOT-KNOT EELWORM: THE MAIN ENEMY
The root-knot eelworms Meloidogyne spp are the usual culprits. They form round lumps on the roots that are easy to identify.
