Livestock ID & Traceability System

The SA government has proposed launching a public-private committee to develop a national livestock identification and traceability system. This will greatly benefit all red meat producers.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has published a draft document on a livestock identification and traceability system (LITS) for South Africa.

The document makes provision for the establishment of a LITS committee to develop the system, consult with stakeholders, and implement and administer the system once established. It will consist of five representatives of DAFF and five from the livestock industry. In addition to presenting the industry and trading partners with a credible system for livestock identification and traceability, the committee will endeavour to carry out the following:

Establish a public/ private partnership between government and industry.

Provide information to producers, service providers and policymakers to enable them to make informed decisions.
