AS I write, it’s early October and I’ve been out virtually every weekend since the end of August, either judging or showing. Every event has been an enjoyable day out, the standard of exhibits has been good and friendships have been made or renewed.

Admittedly, I’m a fancier that is willing to travel, but despite what you hear about the fancy getting smaller, showing as I do both zebra finches and canaries, I can find a show to go to every weekend from the end of August until early January, be it a specialist show or CBS event. Yes, this is a personal choice (coupled with a sense of obligation to attend some), but a common theme at this time of year is the annoyance of show dates clashing and the number of specialist shows condensed into a relatively short time span.
