INTRODUCING THE BIG ISSUE COLLECTOR’S EDITION!
More than 50 of South Africa’s best writers, chefs, thought leaders, public figures, photographers, cartoonists and illustrators.

FROM THIS ISSUE:

“Since the cancellation of News24 comments, anger-related strokes in SA have decreased by 57%, and anger-related keystrokes have declined by 3 000%” – Nik Rabinowitz

“Young Joburgers are ready to decolonise universities with the knowledge that higher learning is structured to leave them out in the cold. To them, being ’born free’ is a con.” – Kagiso Mnisi

“I love South Africa because we sing and dance when we’re angry as well as when we’re happy. Well, I don’t, but that’s because I have European genes. When I get angry I want to commandeer a frigate and attack the French, or go off and plunder a small country.” – Ben Trovato

“How can you not love a country that loves its children?” – Mich Atagana

“Who was this pasty-faced Pom to sneer at my country’s president and automatically expect me to agree? Why? Just because I’m white?” – Darrel Bristow-Bovey

“We were a colony of ticks sticking to an old blanket. We would stand around talking about Clifton and Mrs Ball’s Blatjang and how it costs R26 for a cup of coffee.’” – Jani Allen

“I’ve heard Dr Alzheimer knocks on ageing doors. I just hope he forgets where mine is!” – Pieter-Dirk Uys

“Who am I? I am a human being, a South African, a black person who is sometime called coloured by others. I am a father, a husband, a brother.” – Ryland Fisher

“A country can’t love you back. It can’t even like you very much.” – Tom Eaton

“The women of Cape Town remind me of the grey-blue mountains that hug our shores. They are forever present.” – Zubeida Jaffer

PLUS: Proudly South African recipes from some of our country’s most famous foodies!

Big Issue Description:

The Big Issue is a non-profit nongovernmental organisation (NGO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) that publishes a general interest monthly magazine which focuses on the big social issues of the day. The vendors who sell the magazine are self-employed micro-retailers.

Our Social Development Programme provides vendor support including vocational, life and business skills training and guidance counselling.

The Big Issue aims to actively encourage and equip vendors to “move on” from the project into mainstream society.
