I dette nummeret
We’re celebrating in this issue in signature EQMM fashion! In our January/February 2024 edition, you’ll find Christmas delights (and dastardly deeds) as well as Sherlockian fiction to commemorate the Great Detective’s birthday.
C.H. Hung takes us on a small-time reporter’s journey to discover what’s awry among Christmas-tree sellers in “The Quebecois Quotient,” while Charley Marsh’s protagonist in “Streets of Joy” reckons with the Christmas spirit while investigating the disappearances of unhoused people, including his estranged father. In Passport to Crime’s “Sacrifice in White” by Qinwen Sun, two impossible crimes are set in motion following a student Christmas party at a Chinese University.
Sherlock Holmes devotee Old Red and his brother Big Red are back in the winter-set “Enchantress” by Steve Hockensmith, and Terence Faherty brings us another Holmes parody, “The Crooked Man.” A story of the Holmes era, David Dean’s “The Carfax Lunatic Society” focuses on another iconic character: Dracula, while two other stories focus on classic mystery writers. “The Problem of the Vanishing Sopranos” by Erica Obey” involves an AI program called Doyle who’s trained to write mysteries via the work of S.S. Van Dine, and we’ll leave it to you to figure out what famous writer is invoked in “Where the Heart Is” by Jacqueline Freimor.
Does life imitate art, or vice versa? Ask the characters in “Rendering” by Sophia Lynch (about an artists’ model), “Far From the Tree” by Pete Lieunoir (starring a true crime writer), “How Mary’s Garden Grew” by Elizabeth Elwood (featuring an avid Agatha Christie fan), and “What Is Your . . . ?” by Mat Coward (in which an actor creates a fictional self for his public).
