Known for his wit, humor, and wisdom, former health secretary and senator, Dr. Juan M. Flavier, recently breathed his last at the age of 79 years due to multi-organ failure triggered by a bout of severe pneumonia.

Born to a poor family, this barrio doctor really worked his way up to becoming a brilliant and great man. He was also an exemplary family man despite his hectic schedule at work as Health secretary, and later on, as senator. He showed what an ideal balance in life was all about.

H&L pays tribute to the extraordinary doctor and public servant that Dr. Juan M. Flavier was, featuring an exclusive interview with the former Philippine president, Fidel V. Ramos, who could only wish that the late senator’s brand of public service could be emulated by many of our public officials today; and former DOH Secretary Jaime Galvez-Tan, MD and current DOH Undersecretary Teodoro J. Herbosa, MD who share their fondest memories of the great Filipino health icon.
