Understanding Ebola Virus Disease

While the Philippines remains Ebola-free, the government and health officials are not taking chances because no country can ever be prepared for an outbreak of Ebola Viral Disease (EVD). The mortality rate of all infected cases is high; and up to now, there is still no tried-and-tested effective drug against it. The drugs currently being tried for infected cases are experimental with no assurance on their efficacy and safety.

Formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Ebola virus has a fatality rate of up to 90 percent. The disease has gone beyond the borders of West Africa, and is now a real threat to the whole world. It is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. Close to 200 health workers and missionaries have been afflicted of the disease as it spreads in “ways never seen before.”
