The Path Less Trodden
Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas served in the Doctor-to-the-Barrio (DTTB) program of the Department of Health. He felt the big need for a barrio doctor in a small town in Lanao del Norte, such that after his two-year stint with the DTTB program, despite the lucrative options available to him, he decided to stay.
Doc Drey, as he was fondly called, has shown selfless dedication in his work, and the people in the barrio loved him in return. However, everything came to an end on March 1 this year. Coming home after a long day of conducting a medical mission in one of the remote barangays in Sapad, Lanao del Norte, he was felled by a single bullet that pierced his heart. At age 31, he died a kind of death he certainly didn’t deserve.
His heroism and feat were recognized with the Bayani ng Kalusugan award from the Department of Health. The H&L Health Exemplar Awards also posthumously conferred on him the award as one of the country’s outstanding health exemplars in its recent award ceremonies.
In this issue, H&L pays tribute to the slain barrio doctor, who found so much fulfillment in giving his all—figuratively and literally—to the people who needed his services most. He will remain an inspiration to his fellow doctors and health workers who make that difficult decision of walking the path less trodden.
