Leading Leaders for Change
Leading a big and diverse medical organization like the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) can be a daunting task. The PCP is an affiliate society of the Philippine Medical Association and a member-society of the International Society of Internal Medicine. It’s one of the highly respected organizations which can boast of opinion leaders, scientists and health advocates among its distinguished roll of members.
The PCP has played a vital role in the past as it rallied various medical organizations in the lobbying and final passage of the Sin tax and Reproductive health laws a few years ago. Before they were enacted into laws, the bills had been languishing in both Congress and the Senate for more than 10 years. The active lobbying done by the doctors and other healthcare professionals provided the essential push that convinced our legislators of the urgent need for such laws.
The leadership role the PCP has been playing in the medical community highlights the important responsibility of physicians as true social and health advocates. Gone are the days when the healthcare professionals were mere passive spectators just waiting for things to happen. Now they’re actively swinging the bat on the mound of national events.
In this issue of H&L, our cover story deals with PCP and how it continues to forge a united front among all medical organizations when it comes to pushing for various needed legislation and advocacies. They have also pledged to police their own ranks, enjoining all members to follow strictly the prescribed ethical guidelines in dealing with pharmaceutical companies and patients as well. Their resounding battle cry, as resonated by outgoing president Dr. Anthony Leachon and incoming president Dr. Mariano B. Lopez who are shown on our cover with the former transferring the symbolic truncheon of leadership to the latter, is to “heal with compassion and lead with integrity.”
