I dette nummeret
Democracy gives us the right to select our leaders and government. It gives us the right to decide, and we should use that power wisely.
Ravi Karunanayake is the Minister of Finance of the government headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Minister Karunanayake speaks on the macro picture of the country since the inception of the current government. While he acknowledges that there is more to be done, he states that the milestones achieved thus far cannot be discounted and the government is on track.
Nimal Siripala De Silva is the Leader of the Opposition representing the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA). He is also a senior and well-respected member of the SLFP. The Leader of the Opposition holds a very unique position in the current parliament as the President is from the SLFP and the government has members of both the UNP and SLFP. After a very long time Sri Lanka has an active Opposition.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP and leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna stresses the importance of changing the entire political system in the country. The JVP wants the people to be an active partner in the political process. They want the people to listen to their conscience.
With it becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between the government and the opposition, the people are seeking for an alternative. Udaya Gammanpila assures that Mahinda Rajapaksa is that alternative, not merely by name but by action too.
