The Indian electricity sector, which accounts for 70 percent of domestic coal consumption, is facing a serious threat from the ‘missing’ transmission lines. While the installed capacity stands at around 235 GW, peak load supply is only 140 GW. Further, there is huge shortage of capacity for producing power generation equipment. And the flooding of Chinese equipment is making new capacities vulnerable to serious quality slippage. Will the transmission gaps ground the power sector’s growth engine? Will it make new capacities redundant? What will be the impact on the Indian coal industry and bulging imports? The December issue of Coal Insights brings out a detailed report to highlight the ‘missing links’ in India’s power sector expansion. The issue also covers the contentious issue of the opening up of the domestic coal industry. Partha S Bhattacharyya, former chairman of CIL, gives a clarion call to bring global miners to the Indian shores “without any further delay\".
