Depression in children:
Children too are known to suffer from depression. Some of the symptoms are: Change in behaviour, sadness, worry, refusal to go to school, excess sleep, less eating or not at all, weight loss, giving up on one’s favourite game, stop caring about appearance, irritability, social withdrawal, disruptions in family interaction and school performance.
In children, if these symptoms last for more than two weeks, the caretaker must consult a professional.
For a valid assessment, interviews
are always required. Information from parents (particularly necessary), family members and teachers will be useful. Along with a self report questionnaire, interviewing the depressed child is vital.
